Popular Danville event draws large local crowd and runners from 15 states
CARMEL, Ind. (Sept. 12, 2022) – More than 300 runners and walkers battled the sun and heat during the 11th annual Fair on the Square Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K Presented by Hendricks Regional Health on Saturday, Sept. 10 in Danville, Ind. Race participants were challenged with a scenic yet hilly course through the small town’s streets and rural country roads around Hendricks County and were rewarded with cheers and festival food at the finish line.
The race kicks off Danville Tri Kappa’s popular Fair on the Square community event, an annual two-day festival held at the Hendricks County courthouse square. Nearly 130 people from the Hendricks County area participated in one of the three events, including a strong contingent from the Brownsburg Running Club. Danville resident Michael Humphrey finished second in the men’s 5K race with a time of 17:06, while Brownsburg’s Brandan Kelter finished third in 19:19. Alivia Gustrowsky of Pittsboro finished the women’s 5K in second place in 20:03.
While the event was popular for Hendricks County locals, participants also traveled from as far as California, Florida, Maryland, South Carolina, Texas and Massachusetts to take part in the race. In total, 15 states were represented at this year’s event. Zach Brune traveled from Boston to run the race with Carmel, Ind.-based family members. James Simpson, age 80 of Huntington, Calif., has completed more than 2,100 marathons and added Fair on the Square to his long list of 26.2-mile accomplishments. At 84 years of age, Charles Savage of Ocala, Fla. crossed the marathon finish line as the oldest participant in 2022.

“We were so pleased with this year’s Fair on the Square Presented by Hendricks Regional Health race,” said Todd Oliver, race director and president of CRRG Events. “It doesn’t get any more quintessential ‘small town race’ than holding the event as part of a festival in the square, with cows and horses greeting participants along the course and kettle corn waiting at the finish line. With the unexpected sunshine and heat cropping up, we’re really proud of all of the finishers from near and far.”
