FALMOUTH, MA (July 5, 2022) – Falmouth Road Race, Inc. (FRR, Inc.), organizers of the annual ASICS Falmouth Road Race, one of America’s premier running events, are pleased to announce it has awarded scholarships to 48 local high school seniors, totaling $92,000.
Drea Perez is one of the recipients. A varsity field hockey and lacrosse athlete, Drea is also a member of the National Art Honor Society and was raised by a single, retired military mom. “When I started high school, I was extremely nervous but I knew the girls on the field hockey team were there for me. Showing up for practice each day surrounded by those people always made my day better,” Perez tells us.
This is the eleventh year that FRR, Inc. has awarded scholarships to high school graduates, many of whom volunteer annually at the ASICS Falmouth Road Race. The scholarship funds represent just a fraction of the $5 million the organization has given back to the community since 2012.
The scholarship recipients came from six local high schools, Falmouth High School, Bishop Stang High School, Falmouth Academy, Mashpee Middle-High School, Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School, and Brighton Academy.
This year’s awards were once again matched by the Cochary Gross family, sponsors of the Tommy Cochary High School Mile, named in honor of a Falmouth runner who lost his life in a drunk-driving accident. It’s run each year as part of the Falmouth Track Festival the night before the 7-mile race.
“We could not be more pleased to continue our support of the Falmouth Road Race Scholarship program,” said Liz Cochary Gross. “We know the financial pressure on local families is very real and we don’t want this to limit the ability of our students to go to college. Our motto has been and will continue to be ‘Make Smart Choices’ while transitioning into the next phase of their lives.”
“We are so grateful to the family of Tommy Cochary. With their match, we’re helping more students than ever with their college expenses,” said Scott Ghelfi, president of the FRR, Inc. board of directors. “Since the first race in 1973, the Falmouth Road Race has been about giving back to our community. We couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish.”
While the application process for running the 50th ASICS Falmouth Road Race is closed, there is still time to register for the At-Home Edition. Learn more at www.falmouthroadrace.com.
