2021 race participants experienced a unique course designed to highlight Pittsburgh’s greatest traditions

PITTSBURGH (November 7, 2021) — Thousands of runners returned to the live start line of the ‘most Pittsburgh race ever’ for the first time in two years at the 2021 EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler Sunday morning. Participants from 36 states and four countries completed the 10-mile course that celebrated Pittsburgh’s icons, quirks, traditions and more.

“The energy runners bring back to the city streets is electric. This morning’s race confirmed that,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “The staff, volunteers and event partners jumped right back into action to make this in-person return a success, delivering an amazing Pittsburgh race experience along the course that runners won’t forget.”

Runners began their 10-mile journey on West Carson Street with the Parking Chair Mile. A longstanding Pittbsurgh tradition, nothing says “I’m from Pittsburgh” quite like reserving parking spots with a chair. As they continued through the West End, the Icons of Pittsburgh Mile featured trivia and fun facts about some of Pittsburgh’s most famous favorite icons.

The highly anticipated return of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Mile did not disappoint once runners crossed the West End bridge. Volunteers proudly wore the iconic Fred Rogers red sweater at the first water stop of the course. Neighborhood characters Donkey Hodie and Daniel Tiger spread kindness throughout the fan-favorite mile as “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” played over the speakers.

The Pittsburgh Steeline brought out the inner Pittsburgh sports fan in all of the runners as the drumline welcomed them to the City of Champions Mile. Video screens lined the North Shore playing notable sports highlights in Pittsburgh’s history. Iceburgh even took to the course, cheering on runners and representing the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Crossing the Roberto Clemente Bridge, runners faced the great Pittsburgh dilemma—whether fries go better on sandwiches or in salads. The French Fry Mile celebrates the many ways Pittsburghers can enjoy the salty snack. A favorite place to have french fries in Pittsburgh? Kennywood. Mile Six brings the Pittsburgh amusement park experience right to the city streets with the Kennywood’s Open! Mile. Iconic amusement park music and Kenny the Kangaroo brought the excitement, fun and nostalgia of Kennywood Park to runners on the North Side.

EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler participants doubled as wedding guests at the Pittsburgh Cookie Table Mile. With a stand-in bride and groom, decorations and various Pittsburgh wedding traditions, Mile Seven walked runners down the aisle. A region known for its unique dialect, the Pittsburghese Mile celebrated the Steel City’s vernacular “n’at” as runners took on the Strip District.

Throughout the ninth mile, runners got a ‘taste’ of Pittsburgh with the Pickles & Pierogies Mile. Name a better combo. We’ll wait. As runners made their way to downtown Pittsburgh, the Welcome to the Burgh Mile ended the 10-mile course on a high note. Spectators, volunteers and staff cheered on runners as they crossed the EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler live finish line for the first time since 2019.

“For the past three years, it has been thrilling to see the passion runners have for Pittsburgh throughout the themed experience,” said Schooley. “Whether it be virtual or in-person, participants have expressed how much fun they had celebrating the Steel City with this race.”

Nearly 20 athletes from the Pittsburgh region competed for the race’s $11,000 prize purse in the featured elite athlete field. A new EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler champion was crowned as Chase Weavering won the men’s division with a time of 49:05. Aaron Dinzeo and Nicholas Wolk took second and third places with times of 49:12 and 49:13, respectively.

Elaina Tabb took the top prize in the women’s division with a time of 56:38, with Margo Malone  and Ann Mazur crossing the finish line in second and third with times of 59:12 and 59:50, respectively.

Additionally, more than 300 runners earned an extra medal this morning by completing the #RUNWithP3R Challenge, which included the 2021 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Virtual Weekend of Events, the 2021 Fleet Feet Liberty Mile and today’s EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler.
