All distances will be run exclusively in Cleveland; New routes emphasizes the beauty and lasting strength of the city
CLEVELAND, OH – March 21, 2023 – The Union Home Mortgage Cleveland Marathon announced today new courses for its 5k, 10k, Half and Full Marathon distances. The new routes will put all distances exclusively within the great City of Cleveland. They feature breathtaking views of the Lake Erie shoreline and will take runners past some of the city’s most notable attractions on their way to a finish in the heart of downtown. The events are scheduled to take place May 20/21, 2023.
“We’re so excited to debut these routes to the participants, spectators, supporters and residents that make this such a special race to be a part of,” said Ralph Staph, Cleveland Marathon Race Director. “Cleveland is a great American city. These routes demonstrate that like never before. Whether you live here, you’re from here, or you’ve never been to Cleveland before, you’ll fall in love with the city before you finish the race.”
“The Cleveland Marathon represents the spirit and fabric of our great city; having the grit, endurance and momentum to achieve something great,” said Mayor Justin M. Bibb. “We are excited to welcome this year’s runners – both new and returning – to our city to experience what it’s like to Run The Land.”
Held each year since 1978 and nationally recognized by Runner’s World as one the most scenic courses, the new routes engage participants with the city like never before. Runners will start and finish in the shadow of the Fountain of Eternal Life in Memorial Plaza. The course makes its way past Tower City and Public Square, Progressive Field and onto the Hope Memorial Bridge where runners will rise to magnificent views of the Cuyahoga River under the gaze of the Guardians of Traffic statues.
The route continues into the city’s historic Tremont neighborhood where lively crowds line the street and cheer on runners as they pass the iconic Christmas Story House. Runners of the full marathon distance will be treated to incredible views of Cleveland and Lake Erie from Edgewater Park as they race back downtown for the finish. Other highlights include running underneath the world’s largest outdoor chandelier in Playhouse Square, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and much more.
The weekend of May 20 and 21 is the 46th running of the Union Home Mortgage Cleveland Marathon. With nearly 10,000 runners, spectators, volunteers and more this hallmark event brings together runners from across Northeast Ohio and the world. Event festivities begin with the opening of the Health & Fitness Expo on May 19th at the Huntington Convention Center.
