The second annual Summer Scamper 5K on June 26 was an outstanding event filled with community spirit, food, drinks, and sport. But this beloved race goes well beyond fun and fitness. The 5K raises funds for and is organized by the High Line Canal Conservancy, a non-profit coalition in Denver, Colorado, formed in 2014 to permanently protect and shape the future of the Canal for generations to come.

The High Line Canal is a linear greenway park and one of the longest urban trails in the country. It connects communities across four counties and supports 71 miles of wildlife and natural environment, including prairie land, urban refuge, wooded areas, rolling foothills, and a wild canyon. It is reported that more than 1 million people use the Canal’s recreational resources every year for biking, walking, running, and more. For more than 350,000 residents, the trail is less than a mile from their homes.

For the second year, HAL Sports has provided the Summer Scamper 5K with full event services from directing, timing, and announcing to promotion of this community event. “The High Line Canal is unique and beloved by Denver Metro,” said Lonnie Somers, Chief HAL Officer.  “We are so humbled and honored to work with the Conservancy on what also is a truly one-of-a-kind summer evening run/walk, that brings together the community for a very fun event while supporting the efforts of the HLCC.”

“The High Line Canal Conservancy is thrilled with the success of our second annual Summer Scamper, 5K for All. HAL Sports has played a huge part in building this race and summer festival event from the ground up. Summer Scamper brings together communities from across the region and raises important funds for ongoing work to protect and enhance the 71-mile High Line Canal. We keep hearing ‘I hope you’ll keep doing this event every year!’” said Suzanna Fry Jones, Chief Programs & Impact Officer at the High Line Canal Conservancy.

Currently, High Line Canal Conservancy, in partnership with the Canal Collaborative, is working to implement The Plan for the High Line reclaiming the historic waterway for the region and charting a new life for this legacy greenway.
